Sixty four types of asthmatic skills such as dancing, singing and playing can be introduced as the asthmatic items common to all communities.Today we have a number of asthmatic traditions  that we inherited from the birth of our ancient man.Among these asthmatic Skills, dancing takes  a higher degree because it deals with the main three skills such as singing ,playing and gestures.

such world wide dancing skills are supposed to be the mirror of a certain community because these skills are formed according to their social, economical and traditional extents

we people as Sri Lankans .also have high classical traditions of dancing which can compete shoulder to shoulder with any community around the world without being second.
  • Up country tradition of dancing
  • Law county tradition of dancing
  • Sabaragamu tradition of dancing
The inaugural dressing up of marks to a learner who mastered up-country  tradition of dancing is known as Mask Heading Ceremony. This degree is as same as the  crowning to a new king or a young Samanera's attaining of Upasampada Sila.

This specific ceremony which is not performed for the sake of doing, consists of many special customs and rituals accustomed to itself.Even in the ancient times, our tradition of dancing was possessed of an institutional mood as we find it unchanged today.

This precious asthmatic heritage was fed and protected in homes of great masters of dancing of our motherland. This great asthmatic home was known as "Guru Gedara."

Small boys go to get their basic education when they are about seven or eight years old. After they get their knowledge they go to the teacher's home to improve their art of dancing.their his horoscope is checked to see weather he is good for dancing. Before he goes to the teacher's home they prepare milk rice and oil cakes and also they go to the teacher's home with their parents and relatives. There he offers a sheaf of betel and kneels down to ask for education. At an auspicious time after respecting his parents he keeps the first step of his dancing life.

From this on words he joins the teacher's home and full fills his duties with devotion.

After improving his dancing he has to dance "Dandikande Saramba" or "Pa Salamba" here drum beating is not done but oral singing is done to a rhythm.

After that he is practiced hand drill or "Goda Saramba"here removes from "Dandi Kanda" and start dancing with drum beating.Dancing to a drum is also a sacred function. Many traditional functions are followed here.

Thus After exchanging the basic drilling he is allowed to follow basic dancing parts.thus ,little by little,he tends to learn "Kohomba Kankariya"he starts learning dancing and musical instruments.

After improving his learning he goes with his teacher for dancing. There the new dance posses new costumiers. After that he has to go with his master for theaters.after getting some knowledge he acts in dancing standing behind his experts.

After dancing in the he is qualified for "Wes Bendima" He tries to improve himself and because expert. Here he because obedience, giving place to traditions, patience, disciplined.unity and co-operation after improving these things the teacher decides whether he is good for "Wes Bendima".

After having qualification for wes bedema, the apprentice (student )has to get the permission from his/her parents for this event called wes bedeema. Then the parents have to decide an auspiciousness time according to student's horoscope, and he has to leave his house before the scheduled day which wes ceremony is held. The novel or the apprentice has to spend these days in a Buddhist temple.and he has to refrain from meat, fish, etc within this period. other most important thing is the wes ceremony is held in a temple.

Our dancing systems have grown up under the religious back ground. So in a wes ceremony there are so many rituals to be followed.

One hour before the auspiciousness time the apprentice should be bathed with applying lime juice on his head by a fresh clay pot. After having this bath the novel is accompanied by a procession or perahera and he has to carry a pot full of water with him. This ritual is conducted under the sound of drummers.

At have the novel is accompanied into the shrine room called "Budu Ge" and in the shrine room the apparent is dreamed and  worn with necessary ornaments by his teacher.

When the auspicious time comes apprentice has to observe pansil and Buddhist monks will start the summoning of pirith.

At the auspicious time the apparent is warn with Head dress,Earnings and other ornaments by the teacher. After that the pot is given to the student and the student is accompanied cut of the shrine room by the teacher.here is very special thing that is the no one can see the things which happened in the shrine room.

After that there are some rituals to be fulfilled as follow as,
  1. Looking at novels face from a bowl of water.
  2. T aching a  cow.
  3. Looking at s a jack tree and its leaking juice from its trunk.
  4. Breaking the water pot by putting it on the floor.
Next the apprentice accompanied to the Dewalaya or shrine room and at there he has to do some offerings for God.

When the novel looks at the God the teacher will remove the head covering of the student.this is the very first time which audience can see the apprentice with fully dressed.above mentioned all there rituals are completed  to refrain the apprentice from Evil eye.

After that the novel should worship his teachers and parents and he should perform his first dance for the on lookers.here the dancer has to perform some classical dance.

At the next step the apprentice has to gratitude to his teachers by giving them presents.as well as the parents relatives and others will give presents to the novel.

After completing all the rituals successfully the ceremony comes to its end.and all the visitors are   invited have refreshments.

At the night of scheduled day there is a special curing programmer called "Diya Korahe Baliya" to be performed at the teachers residence.

After all these things, the person is not considered as an apprentist. and he can perform his dance in public.

After having "Wes" the performer has to refrain from having reliquary, having meal and fish and many more.

Flow ever this ceremony is very important to the student .as well as teacher because the apprentiest is under the supervision it teacher for 10-15 years with having love and affection.
